Johnny Appleseed and Applesauce

I hope you heard the news...Johnny Appleseed came through town on Monday and stopped by Winsted Elementary! We sang happy birthday to him (his birthday was on Saturday) and he talked all about apples! It was quite the visit! You can check out our photos with us wearing the pots on our heads just like Johnny did!

Apple Orchard

Today we spent a super fun morning at the Fall Harvest Apple Orchard! The orchard has new owners who just took over at the end of May. They were lovely people! The kids got to check out and feed some animals, play on the mound of hay and mound of tractor tires (sorry they are coming home dirtier!) and take a wagon ride through the orchards to learn about growing and picking apples. We also learned about corn, saw pumpkins and learned about black walnuts on our tractor ride. We then ate lunch with a bunch of bees! No one got stung! Your child was given an apple, gourd, and coloring book from the apple orchard.

 Piglets...super cute!

A peacock...who lost his feathers in July and was growing back new ones. He was strutting in front of some females!

 Taste testing apples...

When we came back, we taste tested red, yellow and green apples to see which we like best. Can you guess the most favorite one from our class? Check out the last picture above!

Gingerbread Man

I hope you all heard about our adventures with the Gingerbread Man on Tuesday. We started a mini unit on this guy by reading different versions of the book and comparing the characters and refrain that s/he always spoke. We made a HUGE gingerbread cookie. Ms. Deb in the kitchen baked it for us but when we went to pick it up, it was GONE! He left us notes all around the school to follow...to the library, to the gym, to the office, to music, to first grade, to 4th grade and then finally back to our room - where we found him! We kept him secure until we could eat him for snack. Delicious!

Stopping by the office with Mrs. Stifter - he was gone but left us a note!
Here is what he looked like after we caught him!

ROY G BIV Rainbow Day!

We finished our mini unit on reviewing colors in our classroom this past Monday. What better way to celebrate than making and eating a rainbow cake! Yummy!
Mixing the white cake mix according to package directions.

We saved some of the batter and mixed some of it yellow, some red and some blue.
We then put the colored batter in the pan along with the white batter.
The kids got to swirl the colors around in the pan.

Here is what it looked like before baking.
The finished product! Yummy!
